Truth be told, we’ve been working on our November Discovery Box for months! With childhood obesity on the rise, and the understanding of where food comes from on the decline, we wanted to design a theme that would get kids thinking about healthy eating… so we happily present our Food Adventure theme Discovery Box! And with such an important subject, we knew we had to make this box extra special, so we partnered with a lot of amazing organizations to make it happen.
No one knows more, or is more passionate about teaching kids to eat healthier than Melissa Graham, the founder of Purple Asparagus, a nonprofit educating children, families and the community about eating that’s good for the body and the planet. Melissa and her team bring ‘delicious, nutritious hands-on adventures to schools, community organizations, and farmers’ markets throughout Chicagoland’ and actually manage to do the impossible: get kids to like eating their vegetables (and fruits)! It’s amazing!!
Melissa graciously teamed up with Green Kid Crafts to provide content and delicious recipes for November’s Discover More Guide. (Having secretly enjoyed these treats for several weeks now, we can honestly tell you that this is worth getting excited over!) You can find other delicious recipes, and tips for getting your kids to be excited about eating healthier, on her blog. Right now we’re craving these tasty looking Apple Pancakes! (By reading the post, you also get an idea of why so many kids just love her workshops!)
In addition, we’ve also partnered with the natural food coupon mavens at Mambo Sprouts to provide another special surprise to our subscribing families — over $20 in free product samples and coupons from some of our favorite brands like Annie’s, Immaculate Baking, Lifeway Kefir, Honest Tea, Stonyfield, Santa Cruz Organic, Mary’s Gone Crackers, Organic Valley and Plum Organic!
But of course, the pièce de résistance is the craft kits! This month’s projects include making a fish game from recycled felt, growing organic basil and alfalfa sprout gardens, and making a set of rainbow tile coasters . The kid testers who worked on these crafts over the summer are actually still enjoying them, so we consider that a very strong recommendation!

I think this is such a great thing to be doing for kids. It is amazing to me how here in the states we are so focused on eating healthy and fitness and meanwhile, our kids are starving themselves heavier with processed fast foods and nonsense treats with a shelf life of like 100 years!
In many countries they eat only the purest, real foods. Sure they might cook with heavy cream in France or indulge in a connoli with fresh ricotta cheese in Italy (i think). But, the idea is they are using the freshest ingredients. Whole foods. REAL stuff. Not boxed substitutes.
Anyway…best of luck to you. And thanks!
That is such a great point Phyllis; thank you!
my pleasure!
keep up the good work.
Love this box idea! Hope to get one and share too!
Thanks Christina!
